I've been thinking a bit about the COG and our participation in it as a group, the COGs place in the local community and other stuff.
As most of you know, I am a member but not part of leadership, and haven't in the past participated in many of the activities. But I would like to change that.
I also notice that while many of us use the space,a fraction of the members come to the members and social nights, and so forth. How many of the total membership have actually helped with the move? I have not, so I feel guilty about that and feel OK pointing out that I believe a minority of the members are doing most of the work in keeping the COG moving towards its further greatness.
I had an idea that I kind of like, but was wondering about your thoughts. It's modeled upon how anonymous "projects" get generated and acted upon. I think it will bind the COG to the community and other communities within Troy. I think it can help bring further members the COG, and maintain a desire by the people of Troy to keep it going as a fundamental part of the Troy landscape.
Anyway, here is the idea:
Can we create a reddit style board where people post possible projects. But these projects are not for the COG, they are for Troy or the people of Troy. Its possible for Trello to be used for this, but maybe it would be a public board that anyone can post an idea on. Projects get voted up or down (I think trello only has up voting), and when we finish one project, the next project at the top of the list gets embarked on if funding becomes available.
The first step of a project is to crowd fund it. It could be through kickstarter or some other method. And we go when there is funding. If the top project doesn't get funded in a certain amount of time, we can abandon it and start again with the next project.
So projects would be "Lets create an aquaponics area for a school so the kids can have fresh food" or "lets create a 24 hour drone surveillance spot" or "lets make a new ramp for this elderly man to get in his house" or "lets make dog poop dispenser boxes for the whole city". Honestly I haven't thought good and hard on what a project might be. The project could be artsy, they could be funny, they could help to create character in an area. they don't have to be do-gooder type at all. But we are the makers in Troy and the area (the project doesn't have tho be in troy itself), Let's make stuff!
Having continual projects, done by people in the maker space would adhere the COG to the community, perhaps encourage more people to join it, perhaps increase membership. We could all wear COG tee shirts or jackets when we do an installation so it is well known who is providing the item. I also think it would help bring us together as members. I know a few of you, but certainly not near all of you.
Anyway, Its just an idea, but I thought it could really bring out the COG as a fundamental part of Troy, and not just a nerd library (I'm allowed to call it that, I'm a nerd).
Thoughts? flame away.
